FERTILIZATION & SOIL AMENDMENTS-

LET’S STOP TREATING OUR SOIL LIKE DIRT

Dirt is what you wash out of clothes. Soil is alive, filled with beneficial animals, fungi, insects, arthropods, bacteria, and other organisms living their mystery lives out of our sight. These animals live in the spaces between the soil particles, relying on air, water, organic matter and essential nutrients.

Soil health is a very complex topic that doesn’t begin with a bag of fertilizer. It is true that healthy trees start with healthy soil. Yet, that doesn't mean running out and loading up on whatever fertilizer happens to be on sale. There are times when a good quality fertilizer will make a difference. In those cases we do recommend and apply fertilizer and other soil amendments.

Many of the problems that plants experience are related to human activities and limited understanding of the soil. Poor soil treatments can destroy the structure and balance that is present. For example, one of the biggest problems is soil compaction during excavation or heavy machinery use. Compaction restricts the flow of air and water leading to stress and potentially death of the roots.

So, before spending your money on high nitrogen, fast acting products, we recommend having your trees and yard evaluated by a professional arborist whose primary income is not dependent on how many spray or fertilization contracts are written that month. If you have more questions, contact us.
